Culture of urban Lithuanian youth in the early years of states’ independence
In the wake of great political changes and turmoil during the late 80‘s, the youth in the newly independent post-soviet states have been exposed to previously unimagined amounts of western media. This led to an increase in subcultures, (punks, goths, metalheads, etc.) which had one defining characteristic that united them all – their uniqueness. Inspired by the aforementioned Western fashion, music and lifestyle, these rebels provoked interest, outrage, or even both, of many passers-by. Growing up in this shifting period would lead to many interesting stories in and of itself. However, standing out in a society where up until then individuality was suppressed, provide an even greater layer of depth to an already exceptional page of states’ history. In this project the goal is to provide a glimpse into the life a person experiencing just that.
