The fate of collective gardening
This anthropology project focuses on the phenomenon of the collective gardening in the soviet and post-soviet eras. To grasp the essence of what those gardener communities were like and what they have become nowadays, authors conducted three in-depth interviews with owners or ex-owners of the collective gardening allotments, showing how this phenomenon comes to mean different things for different people. The presentation tells a story of the establishment of such communes, and of their transformation since the early days. A variety of questions is addressed. Why was the mass collective gardening promoted by the government? Why were such bizarre regulations on construction imposed by the authorities? What is the future of the neighborhoods that once teemed with gardeners that are no more there? The PowerPoint presentation includes highlights of the interviews in text an audio formats.
