"Dainos teatras": (mis)understood resistance

When it comes to the activities of Lithuanian musical bands during the last years of the Soviet occupation, we mostly remember groups like “Antis”, “BIX”, or “Foje”. However, the band “Dainos teatras”, founded by Vytautas Kernagis in 1985, is undeservedly sidelined, as it was a significant part of the anti-Soviet resistance.

The research involved 4 interviews with members and listeners of “Dainos teatras”. The interviews revealed what anti-Soviet messages “Dainos teatras” was spreading during its performances, how they were perceived by the audience – and why the band sees the song “Mūsų dienos kaip šventė” as absurd.
